Mary & Dave Timmer

I’m Mary Timmer. I grew up in Western Michigan helping my Mom in  her big family garden. We’ve had a backyard garden in Pella for over 30 years. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren in the Iowa City  area. They have been instrumental in starting a Community Garden  at Coralville Central School. I work at the Pella Early Learning Center  with toddlers and plants. I also like reading and finding good books  for our Second Reformed Church Library.

I’m Dave Timmer. I grew up in Terre Haute Indiana & worked summers helping in my Dad’s landscaping business. I earned a PhD in Theology from Notre Dame and have spent 37 years teaching at Central College. I sing in two choirs and am a member of Pella’s Creation Care Group.

Rhonda Kermode

Rhonda Kermode

Hi!  I'm Rhonda Kermode.  I have been working in the Heartland Community Garden for many years.  When I started, I knew nothing about gardening.  I learned from more experienced gardeners.   Over the years, my knowledge has grown but I'm still learning.  We concentrate on growing the basics; tomatoes, peppers, green beans, peas, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower etc.   We have also grown some unique things; luffa gourds (yes, that's where the luffa sponge comes from), broom corn, artichokes, and okra.  It is fun to learn about different plants and the kids who come and help think they're interesting too.   There are times when I might come and work in the garden on my own. It is so peaceful and quiet and I can worship God through my work, prayer, singing, and/or reflection.  When I come out at regularly scheduled times and work with others, we have a good time talking and laughing.  We also learn more about gardening from each other.  But the best part about working in the garden is that I am allowing God to use me to provide nutritious food for those in need.  We hope that we can grow this ministry even more by showing people different ways to prepare and/or preserve the produce that we, and others, donate to the food shelf.  I enjoy serving beside others who work in our garden, at the food shelf, and The Well to provide for and build relationships with those in need.
